When it is used

Circulating a contract, policy or report for comment. The commonest use is defensive: stopping a draft being quoted back as though it were settled.

Worth knowing

Set in wide, spaced letters with a dashed frame so it reads as provisional at a glance, even in a thumbnail.

  • The date fills itself in. It is a live field, not typed text, so the stamp is right every time you place it.
  • Change anything. Wording, ink, frame, size and the distress that makes it read as physically inked.
